Anthony Albanese must intervene in ‘horrific’ Alice Springs crime and domestic violence crisis: Peter Dutton


Opposition leader Peter Dutton has called for the Albanese Government to intervene in the “horrific” situation unfolding in Alice Springs.

Mr Dutton said the Government was failing to listen to the voices of Aboriginal people concerned about the crime and child protection issues plaguing the Central Australian town.

“You’ve got kids up there who are too afraid to go home at night-time because of the sexual abuse rates and the violence within families is quite horrific,” he told 5AA.

“So, they’re not going home at night-time. They’re committing crimes out in the streets of a night-time and then sleeping during the day and not going to school.”

Mr Dutton called for a Royal Commission into the “unconscionable” sexual abuse of Aboriginal children after visiting Alice Springs last October.

Last month Sky News revealed two cases were offenders were allowed to walk free from prison less then 12 months after being sentenced for raping young children in Tennant Creek, about 500km north of Alice Springs.
